Bound by Spells Blitz

Book & Author Details:

Bound by Spells by Stormy Smith
(Bound #2)
Publication date: March 19th 2015
Genres: New Adult, Paranormal

Synopsis:
Aidan Montgomery hadn’t been prepared for Amelia Bradbury to walk in and then out of his life. He also hadn’t expected to find the powerful magic hidden deep within him for the last nineteen years, but he’s embracing it — finding more control and more answers every day. Now, with the help of Amelia’s best friend, Bethany, Aidan is on a quest to understand his destiny and find Amelia.
Amelia decided to stand by her duty, which meant walking away from her first chance at love. Trapped in Cresthaven at the Queen’s mercy, she spends her days with Micah — an ally she still holds at arm’s length — struggling to manage her heartbreak while keeping her mind focused on the task at hand. As she continues to unlock the secrets of the Keeper power, Queen Julia’s true motives reveal themselves, forcing Amelia to decide, yet again, how much she’s willing to sacrifice.
Will Aidan get to Amelia before it’s too late, or will the very power that sustains them keep them apart?

It’s always fun to talk about a second book, but we never want to spoil anything about the first one for you, so today, we have a special treat from Stormy Smith, author of the Bound Series. Right now, BOTH Bound by Duty and Bound by Spells are on sale for just 99 cents each on Amazon (US and UK).

Guest Post:
To set this up, the Bound Series is a coming of age story. A clean, new adult, urban fantasy that has wracked up 190 5-star reviews between both books. Bound by Duty is the story from Amelia, our main character, and Bound by Spells alternates between Amelia and Aidan.

Right now, Bound by Duty is nominated for “Best Book Hangover” in the UtopYA 2015 awards and Bound by Spells was endorsed by USA Today’s Happy Ever After blog as “paranormal gold.”

Our treat, however, is an alternate POV scene from the swoon-worthy Aidan, our main man in the Bound series. This scene happens near the beginning of Bound by Duty and gives you a glimpse into what’s to come without spoiling anything. Consider it a teaser of the man you’ll get more from in Bound by Spells!

Bound by Duty – from Aidan

What in the hell am I doing here? The thought raced through my head for the hundredth time. I scrubbed both hands over my face and back through my hair, yanking on it a little and trying to reason with myself.

You’re going to freak her out.

She doesn’t even know you.

‘Oh, hi, Amelia. I know you don’t know me but I’ve been watching you the last few weeks and I think we’d get along great. No, I’m not a creeper. Trust me.’

I groaned and dropped my head down. I was sitting under some kind of beach pergola on a picnic table that had seen better days. If I even took a deep breath it might crumple under me. I was hiding and I knew it. It’s bad enough I heard Amelia and her friend talking about this party and then psyched myself into showing up, but now I have totally chickened out. I wasn’t interested in the party or the drunk chicks upstairs. Just her.

I don’t normally get worked up like this but she has me all turned around. I’d been watching Amelia Bradbury since the first day of class. I was the charmer. I knew from years of experience with foster families how to make sure people liked me, but she never even gave me a chance. She wanted to hide and never once even looked my way. I could see it in the way her eyes darted all over the room without making eye contact with anyone. And in the way she wore her hair down, trying to hide behind the long, dark strands. She sat in the back, forcing me to the outer edges of the room so that I could keep watching without making it obvious. When she got up she would often run into things, but never people, clutching her backpack before hustling to the next place.

The first time I saw her relax was by accident. I was in the commons eating and suddenly, there she was. Her eyes lit up and her posture straightened. She yanked the band from her wrist and flipped her head down, coming back up with it in a ponytail. It was the first time I’d been able to truly see her and I was captivated. Her eyes couldn’t decide what color they wanted to be and floated between brown and green. Some people would call it hazel but they didn’t mix so much as shift as the light hit them. She was thin but curved. I wanted to run my hands from her shoulders to her hips just to feel the dip and flare. I turned, anxiety flooding my system, and found the source of her joy…another girl. I let go of a breath I hadn’t known I was holding and couldn’t stop the laugh the erupted from my chest. Amelia strode up, gave the blond a hug, and they immediately started talking. Then the blond spoke and Amelia laughed. It was music to my deaf ears and something inside me came alive. I wanted to be the one to do that. I wanted to make her laugh. For the first time in my life I was jealous of a girl.

I was ready to call it. Being here on this picnic bench was ridiculous and there was no way I was going to have the balls to walk up to her now. I had completely psyched myself out of having any kind of shot at this. I was ready to get up and head for my car when I heard someone bouncing down the stairs. I worried first that something was wrong. Their feet pattered down so quickly I thought they might be running. I stayed in my spot in the shadows, but tensed my body in case I had to move quickly. Lately I had had way too much excess energy and I’d been spending a lot of time in the gym. I could do some damage if it came down to it. The last thing I expected was to see shoes flipping off and long legs soaring through the air as Amelia leapt from the last step and landed softly out into the sand. For just a moment she was suspended mid-air and I could have sworn she was flying. When she hit the beach she didn’t miss a beat, her feet moving her swiftly toward the water.

Her body was long and lean. A ballerina but with curves. She was so focused on the water that it wasn’t until she was ankle deep and had dropped her head back, a small satisfied smile pulling at her lips, that she realized she wasn’t alone. I had barely moved, a low groan coming from the bench underneath me. Her whole body stiffened in what I assumed was fear. I felt like an intruder. This was going to be a great way for us to meet, surely. But, you shouldn’t blow opportunities when they come. Or so said my last caseworker before I turned eighteen and had been accepted into Brighton’s community college. No sense in turning back now.

“So, you’re hiding from them, too, huh?” I was going for charming. Like I had some kind of game. But the words felt like peanut butter in my mouth and I was glad she couldn’t see my reddened face from where she was standing. Amelia slowly turned toward me, her voice small as she squinted and tried to see me better. “Do I know you?”

I felt like even more of a tool. She had no idea who I was. She stared my way for a few more seconds and then whipped around, facing back out into the water. I watched her chest moving quickly, her breaths coming too fast. I slowly started to move toward her, worried she might be getting a little too freaked out and wanting to reassure her that I wasn’t actually a sociopath.

“You don’t have anything to worry about,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady but soft. She turned to face me slowly and the full moon sliced its light just perfectly to illuminate me but keep her face mostly shadowed. She was close enough that I could see her eyes widen and roam from my nose to my knees, without ever meeting my own. I stood up a little taller and couldn’t stop the smirk as I realized I might have some of the same effect on her that she had on me. She raked her gaze up and down and it wasn’t until I tried to get her attention that her eyes finally snapped back to mine.

I couldn’t help but laugh as I waved a hand in front of her face and said, “Hello?” Then the Amelia I knew came back in a mad rush. She fumbled over her words, looking anywhere but at me. She tugged at the ends of her hair and a tried to walk away, but I couldn’t let her. I wasn’t ready to let her go yet and I needed to know her. I couldn’t stop myself from reaching out and taking her arm. It was our first contact and I don’t know what I had expected, but it wasn’t heat blooming under my fingertips or her heartbeat inside my head. In milliseconds of my skin on hers she was inside me, and I knew I’d never get her out.

“Wait. Just wait.” More quiet, controlled words. I couldn’t let her leave. I had to keep her there. I had to keep touching her. “I’ve seen you before. You’re Amelia, right?” Normal, Aidan. Act normal.

“Yeah,” she whispered. I had forced her to look at me and I would swear to any judge that we wore the same expression. She felt something. I knew she did.

“We have a couple classes together, but you always sit in the back and never say anything.” Dammit. So suave. So charming. You’re an idiot, Montgomery

I was instantly ashamed. I watched her reaction and I knew it too well. She squeezed her eyes shut and her lips smashed together, holding in the pain of not fitting in. I might be a charmer now, but I’d been sent away by enough families to know what I had just done.

“Oh, that was dumb. I’m sorry. Anyway, I’m Aidan. Aidan Montgomery.” I took advantage of the opportunity to trail my fingertips from her bicep down to her wrist and then folded her hand into mine, shaking it softly. I felt fire the whole way and judging by the widening of her eyes and the swift intake of breath, so did she. For a second, she gripped my hand, but as our eyes connected again and I couldn’t stop my grin, she dropped it and without a word took off running. I couldn’t move, my hand still in front of me and my jaw hanging open, as I watched her bound up the stairs and disappear. I dropped onto the hard-packed sand and didn’t bother to move as the tide rose and the salty water surrounded me.

Well, that couldn’t have gone better.

Excerpt 3

Azael freezes, his back stiffening with indignation as he turns to look at me and then back at Michael. “Are you going to kill me now?” he asks, smiling.

My mouth goes dry. Now is our chance to stop him—to finish this once and for all. But killing Azael here, like this... It will get us nowhere. There are enough soldiers fighting for him who would easily take his place if he were to fall. There’s always someone else to step up into power, and who’s to say that they wouldn’t be worse than Azael?

I hold my daggers out to Azael and look at Michael. “How many are injured?” I ask, nodding to the door.

He looks behind him and shakes his head. “A lot.”

“Dead?” I ask.

He shakes his head again.

Azael, laughing, gets to his feet. He looks pathetic and insane, his hair a mess and his eyes wild with anarchy. Everything about him screams savagery—the blood on his face, on his hands, in his hair—but he holds himself so still, so calm, even when he stumbles. He is Pandora’s box: madness, chaos, and death locked within. I don’t want to see what happens when that lid flips open.

“Kill me!” His words are high and hysterical, a disturbing singsong to its pitch. With wide gestures, he sweeps his arms in front of him, beckoning Michael forth. He even bows a little at the waist like he’s about to join in on a dance. “Kill me! Isn’t that what you’re both here to do?” He swivels toward me. “My sister. Come on now. Bury that blade in my heart. Pull my head off my body and put it on a pike to serve as a warning to others.”

Interview:

How does it feel to finally have finished the series?

Really weird, actually. But good weird, I think. Ignite was the first book I published, and this is the first series I’ve written, so to actually be finished with the stories and the characters I imagined about three years ago…it’s cliché to say it, but it’s like saying goodbye to old friends. I think what makes me more excited than sad about it, though, is that I really love the conclusion to the series and feel that I left the characters in places that make sense—and in places where the reader knows the story continues after The End. Plus, I’m now free to write all these other books I have floating around in my brain, so that helps with the mourning process!

Are your fans going to be devastated with the events in Infinite?

Devastated? Gosh, I hope not. Well…maybe. It depends. I had the final scenes of the series pretty much written when I started writing Ignite; I knew where the characters would all end up. While I got deeper into the series, I reevaluated that ending to see if it’s still what I wanted, and I tried about three different versions. There are some character deaths in Infinite, and I didn’t make those choices lightly. I tried writing some scenes a few times, with different outcomes, to make sure that anything that might come across as devastating was something that 1) needed to happen and 2) made sense to happen. Hopefully that consideration will come across and readers won’t be completely devastated. That being said, my editor had a few scenes where her comments were just: “NOOOOOOOO!” So…

What are you currently reading?

Right now, I’m reading Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, and I love it! I picked it up and nearly finished it in a day, so I don’t know how much longer I’ll be reading that one. Up next, I’m reading Afterworlds by Scott Westerfeld (who is one of my favorite authors) and then Lair of Dreams by Libba Bray which I am SO! EXCITED! FOR!!!!!

What's your next project, now that you have finished Infinite?

That’s the million dollar question right now, and it’s one that has me a liiiittle bit nervous! I think I want to write a standalone first to get out of the Ignite series, and I’m toying around with a really fun one — it’s a dark fantasy (that I haven’t mentioned anywhere yet!) inspired by European folklore and the Blair Witch Project stories. I also have a few contemporaries on the back burner, and a number of new adult projects. Basically, I’m going to be playing around a little bit with everything until I find the one.

Do you plan on writing another novella for the series ( I would thank you forever if you did)!

Haha, for now… I don’t think so. I might later on decide to publish really short flash-fiction in the world of Ignite on WattPad or something. But I’m really happy with where I’ve left the world, and I think something really major would have to happen in my mind to these characters to revisit and write something more. We’ll see, though. I will never say definitively no!

Now that Infinite is being released, which of the books was your favorite to write?

This is a tricky one, because I want to say Incite. But Incite was really both Incite and Infinite in the end. I think my favorite scenes are in Infinite, and I really loved exploring Lilith’s voice. She was so different from Azael and Pen — darker in a completely new way. It also felt really good to finish the entire series and close the book (ahhhh) on that chapter (ahhhhh!) of my life. But seriously, I think I’m most excited for people to read Infinite and see how everything ends, so I’ll probably say that was also the most fun to write!

Synopsis (GR):
Sometimes the only thing standing between fear and hope is you.

Almost a year ago, nineteen-year-old Cassie Harlen had a lot to deal with. A stack of college acceptance letters waiting for answers, a proposal from the boy next door, and a mother whose most recent bipolar episode left Cassie hurt and confused. Tired of cleaning up the messes caused by her mother's disorder, of resenting her mother for not being there, and scared of being trapped by an inevitable future—which included marrying Graham Tucker—Cassie did the only thing she could think of to keep from ending up like her mother: she left.

Graham never knew why Cassie walked away. He woke up one morning and she was gone—along with the life that he’d created around her. After eleven months, Graham has a new plan for his future. One that doesn't involve Cassie Harlen.

When Cassie's mom nearly burns down her house, Cassie’s forced to return home. Back to a mother she’s tried to ignore and the guy she’s been unable to forget. Graham doesn't know how he's going to spend the whole summer living next door to the person who broke his heart without letting those old feelings push through to the surface.

Neither does Cassie.

INTERVIEW:

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
In college. I’d always spent my time imagining, reading, writing stories and playing Barbies--but it never connected with me until I read a novel that made me want to write so others could feel like I did. So in college I took some writing classes starting end of sophomore year and I’ve never looked back.

What do you like to do when you're not writing?
I’m in grad school and I’m a nanny. I’m also at a bookstore where I coordinate a book festival and work in the store. So when I’m not working or writing, I like to go to the gym and eat good food and spend time with people I love. Sometimes I get to read or watch TV or I just sleep.

Where do you get your ideas for your books?
They sort of just come to me. I’m not usually actively looking for a story when one finds me! I do have a list of ideas but I will probably never write any of them. Characters just live in my head and when they’re ready to share their story, they start yelling at me to write it...so I do.

As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?
A country singer! I was going to live in Nashville and my grandpa was going to drive my tour bus around the world. :)

What inspired you to write the story?
I was standing in my kitchen in December, about to go to a Christmas party, and it was beautiful, very sunny, outside. And bam -- I heard the first line. “On days like this mom used to pull me out of school and drive us down the coast.” By the time the party came around a few hours later, I had most of the story figured out. I told my friend Jenny about it, and I was like “But I can’t write it right now! I’m on deadline!” and of course, I ignored that and did it anyway.

Who are your favorite authors?
Jennifer Donnelly, Cora Carmack, Rachel Harris, David Levithan, Marie Rutkoski, Courtney Summers, Laini Taylor, Jason Reynolds -- there are MANY.

What is your favorite book and why?
A Northern Light by Jennifer Donnelly because it’s the book I read in college that changed my life. I actually met her last year at BEA and got to share with her how much that book meant to me -- and that was really glorious.

For your own reading, do you prefer ebooks or traditional paper/hard back books?
Hard copies! I usually read ebooks if it’s NA, but otherwise give me the real deal. Support indie bookstores!!!
What book/s are you reading at present?
I’m not fully committed to anything -- grad student over here -- but the books I have opened/purchased/pre-ordered and are waiting to read next are: All the Rage by Courtney Summers, An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir, All Played Out by Cora Carmack, Flirting with Scandal by Chanel Cleeton and Love on the Ledge by Zoraida Cordova.

Obviously, I have an over-commitment problem. I just need a whole week to do nothing but read!
What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

If there’s anything else in the whole world that you can do instead, anything that brings you joy, fills your passion and pokes at your brain in the middle of the night—do that instead. Follow your other passion(s).

I say that because writing is hard. So hard. Harder than you think you know. It’s uncertain, exhausting, this endless harrowing of self-doubt and second-guessing, subjective, critical, and it’s slower than molasses. If you have something else in your life that you can pursue and be fulfilled by, then do that instead. It will make you happier.

It’s when you don’t have anything else, when you know this is your path, that you don’t let any of the bad things change your opinion and you give it 120% because failure isn’t option. If you have a fall back plan, another idea of what you can do with your life, then I honestly believe you should pursue that. If writing is where you’re meant to be then you’ll come back to it.

About the Author:

Danielle Ellison spent most of her childhood reading instead of learning math. It's probably the reason she can't

divide without a calculator and has spent her life seeking the next adventure. It's also probably the reason she's had so many different zip codes and jobs.

Danielle is the author of the YA books, Salt, Storm, and Follow Me Through Darkness. Days Like This is her first NA.

When she’s not writing, Danielle is probably  eating cookies, fighting her nomadic urges, watching too much TV, or dreaming of the day when she can be British. She has settled in Northern Virginia, for now, but you can always find her on twitter @DanielleEWrites.

Interview:

1) What made you decide to write the Malice series?
There are so many books out right now that are so similar. I wanted to come up with a completely unique storyline.

2) What made you choose to become a writer? Is it a long time passion?
Yes, writing is a longtime passion. I’ve been an avid reader my whole life. I started writing when I was in high school. I stopped writing for a bit when my kids were small. I had been working at a job where I was fortunate enough to have my summers off. I wrote Twisted (my debut novel) just for fun, over a summer vacation. I held onto it for a few years while I worked on other books. At the time, there was no such thing as self-publishing. Eventually e-readers came out and I decided to take a chance. I haven’t regretted it and only wish I’d self-published sooner.

3) Do you have a favorite place you like to write?
I’m easily distracted. I can only write at home, in my office. I do keep a notebook with me everywhere I go. I’m always jotting down ideas, scenes, or lines that come into my head.

4) Do you write an outline before you wrote Malice or did you skip the outline and jump into the full story? If you used an outline, did you find it easier to write your book or harder?
When writing I usually come up with my own version of an outline. I list out the chapters. From there I write down the ideas/scenes that have popped into my head. There ends up being a lot of cutting and pasting as I move chapters around. This method probably wouldn’t work for everybody but it has worked well for me. It’s a fluid approach and it’s easy to make changes as the story unfolds.

5) What are some of your favorite past times besides writing? I love to read, that’s probably a given. Both of my sons are in baseball and I spend a good chunk of spring and summer going to their games. In the winter we love to go to hockey games.

6) What do you hope readers will get out of reading the Malice trilogy?
A unique reading experience. There are so many books on the market right now and a lot of them are so similar. I wanted to take the storyline in a direction I hadn’t read about before.

7) Do you have a future book planned?
I am working on Burned, a romantic coming of age comedy. It is a spin-off from a book I wrote a while ago (Ditched).

Moritz’s weak heart is kept pumping by an electronic pacemaker. If they ever did meet, Ollie would seize. But Moritz would die without his pacemaker. Both hermits from society, the boys develop a fierce bond through letters that become a lifeline during dark times—as Ollie loses his only friend, Liz, to the normalcy of high school and Moritz deals with a bully set on destroying him.

A story of impossible friendship and hope under strange circumstances, this debut is powerful, dark and humorous in equal measure. These extraordinary voices bring readers into the hearts and minds of two special boys who, like many teens, are just waiting for their moment to shine.

What do I say about this book? How about everyone needs to go out and buy this book right now! For Leah Thomas' debut novel, she really hit a home run with me and this book. The story itself was brilliantly written and one that I will come back to time and time again.

The characters Ollie and Moritz remind me of some friends and myself who I haven't had a chance to meet yet, which is why this book means something special to me. I will say that the ending of this book blew me away. I wouldn't have seen it coming even if it hit me. The events of what is happening are told in a brilliant manner, through the letters to each other which makes it that much more personal of a feel. What can I say other than the more feels packed into a book the better! This book was full of feels for me. I have to thank my friend for telling me about this book in the first place.

Ollie and Moritz are two of the most complex yet simple characters I think I've ever read about. What do I mean by this, well they're both hermits and they can't do things that other people can but they want to be normal (or what normal is anyway). Their pasts and presents are what make them so complex. For these two alone, my heart went out to them and hoping and feeling everything they felt.

Okay pretty much the short version: 5/5 Stars and ALL THE FEELS!
